Ajaccio is located on the western part of Corsica between Porto and Bonifacio. Steeped in history, it was the birthplace of Napoleon whose memory is present in many monuments and shops in the city. Located between sea and mountains, the beaches at Ajaccio are among the most beautiful beaches of Corsica. A special mention for the beaches on the road to “Sanguinaires” islands. There are also some wild coves, away from the crowd. On the side of the airport, over several kilometres and up to Porticcio, a large sandy beach will also appeal to many sea/sun worshippers.
But Ajaccio is not only famous for its sandy beaches. Tourists also come here to visit the city and the Gulf of Ajaccio. Many museums are worth visiting (Bonaparte home, Napoleonic museum, Fesch museum). On the port, from the pier of the Citadel, one can also admire the beautiful view of the Gulf of Ajaccio. On the south side of Ajaccio, the Tower of Capitello (south of the airport, at the mouth of the Gravona above the Ricanto beach) is one of the Genoese towers of Corsica. You can also visit the beaches of Porticcio (possibility to go there by boat from Ajaccio) located in front of Ajaccio and where there are beautiful sandy beaches and a water park. It is a pleasant little resort in the summer season.
North of Ajaccio, the road of the “Sanguinaires” islands offers the most beautiful beaches of Ajaccio. You can go to Minaccia cove which is a renowned spot for surfers. From the Genoese tower of Capo di Feno you will have one of the best views of Corsica across the Gulf of Sagone. Further north, the resort of Cargèse offers a less touristy environment. The Gulf of Porto merits at least a full day’s visit (possibility to discover the Gulf and the Scandola Reserve by boat from Ajaccio).
