With three departments on the French Atlantic coast, we find a large number of beaches in Aquitaine. The majority of beaches are sand and offer very different landscapes.
The beaches of Pyrenees Atlantiques are animated all through the year with different seaside destinations that are very reputed, like Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, or Hendaye. The different destinations are very close to each other. It is not always easy to access the beaches due to many cliffs, especially between Hendaye and Ciboure.
The beaches of Landes are characterized by their dune space and pinewoods. The beaches are easily accessible. Many lakes permit secure swimming areas. The destinations in Landes are crowded with surfers.
To the north we find the beaches of Gironde which neighbors Landes, apart from the area around the bassin d'Arcachon. In the department, the dune Pilat is one of the most visited sites in France, offering an out of the ordinary panorama of the forest.
The different beaches in Aquitaine are separated from the beaches in Charante-Maritime to the north by the Gironde estuary.
Located a few hundred meters from Spain, Hendaye is one of the most important seaside destinations in Pays Basque in France. We find the most beautiful beaches of the Cote Basque stretching over close to three kilometers along the seafront.
