Lacanau is one of the most important seaside destinations in Gironde in France. It is located about fifty kilometers from Bordeaux at the heart of the Médoc peninsula. Its origins date back to the Gauls and was one of the first cities in the 20th century to attract tourists that are keen on the sea.
The long Lacanau beaches are well protected by the dunes and swimmers are surrounded by nature. The area welcomes an important sporting event, le Lacanau Pro, which attracts the biggest surfing champions of the world. From the very busy Centrale Beach to familial Ecureuils Beach (or Sud Beach), everyone can find the right beach. Lion Beach is the most interesting in terms of history with former blockhous and fortifications dating back to WWII.
We also find a lake with beaches in Lacanau. They are the meeting point for families with children. They are secure which differs from the ocean beaches where you must be prudent.
The beaches are not the only attributes of Lacanau. Its geographical location between ocean and natural reserve allow many sites to be discovered. We can, for example, visit the route des vins, take walks, go horseback riding or take a bike ride on one of the trails in the commune or even discover the Atlantic's coasts, notably the Bassin d'Arcachon to the south, Andernos-les-Bains and Cap-Ferret. Nearby are the beaches of Porge (to the south) that are more wild and those of Carcans-Ocean which compete the choice between ocean and lake.
