At the heart of the department of the Gironde, the resort of Hourtin, along with Lacanau and Carcans, is part of the Medoc Lakes group of counties. It borders indeed a vast expanse of water that bears its name and is the second largest natural freshwater lake in France after Lake Geneva. A sport orientated city, it offers many activities for visitors, surfing, kite surfing, paddle boating, water skiing or windsurfing. Located in the heart of a nature reserve, forest roads allow us to appreciate the diversity of fauna and the local flora while not sunbathing on the long sandy beach. Contaut’s Lagoon behind the dunes along the coast, is one of the most beautiful places to discover.
As for the beaches in Hourtin, we can enjoy the great ocean beach that is supervised at Houtin-Plage. By bike, we can reach the beaches of the North or South (unsupervised). The beaches of Lacanau and Carcans are also accessible by bike. Around Hourtin’s lake (shared with Carcans), there are also two supervised beaches, ideal for families with children.
Younger children can learn to water sports in the local club that offers "surf camp”. The town is situated in one of the few places in France where the tidal bores occur; they are exceptional natural phenomena to surf for a long time on the same wave, a real spectacle for tourists! The stay also allows you to discover Bordeaux and the cities around the estuary of Gironde, Royan, Soulac-sur-Mer and the Cordouan’s lighthouse during a boat trip!
