Catalans Beach in Marseille is the most popular beach and is the closest to the Vieux-Port (Old Harbor). It is also famous for its two beach volleyball courts where several international competitions are organized. This fine sand beach has a lifeguard in the summer and a first-aid station and several services (snacks, sundeck, set-points...). All around we can see the ancient bathing huts like on the beaches in the north of France. We also have a great view of the Iles du Frioul.
This beach is accessible from the Vieux-Port by foot in about 15 minutes (Quai Rive Neuve and Boulevard Charle Livon, the beach is next to the Cercle des Nageurs de Marseille) or by bus (stop at Catalans). It is very difficult to find parking nearby.
Note that this beach is only accessible by stairs. A favorite of our editorial team, the restaurant across form this beach (Chez Michel, on the other side of the road) serves one of the best “bouillabaisses” in Marseille.
