Located between the harbour of Lorient and Plouhinec, the seaside resort of Gâvres extends on a peninsula with on one side the Atlantic Ocean and on the other the Small Sea of Gâvres. Accessible by a single road, its enclosed side allows it to keep a human size and a special atmosphere. This ancient island (linked to the land by a tombolo, you will find the same style in the south of France at the resort of Hyères where Giens is connected to the continent by a tombolo), by its geographical features, has a huge sandy beach. Its inland sea (opposite Port Louis) is also appreciated by the shore fishermen (clams and cockles) and sportsmen (at high tide you can practice kitesurfing and windsurfing).
There are five beaches at Gâvres. The most popular and best equipped is along the tombolo facing the Atlantic Ocean. The area closest to the city centre is the most crowded. Four other beaches are located around the city centre. Smaller, they are mostly frequented by locals.
On the east side (the side of Larmor-Plage is not directly accessible because of the harbour of Lorient); you can find numerous other beaches. The beaches of Plouhinec follow on from those of Gâvres and extend to the mouth of the Etel. We also appreciate the beaches of Erdeven that mark the entrance to the bay of Quiberon.
Dogs are forbidden on all the beaches of Gâvres. The closest beaches where dogs are allowed are in Plouharnel.
