The seaside resort of Hyeres is one of the most important resorts in the south of France. The vast territory stretches between sea, salt fields, peninsula and islands. The choice is wide when it comes to the beaches in Hyères: twenty beaches on the mainland and many beaches on the islands, including the famous beaches of Porquerolles. Most beaches are sandy. We prefer the beaches between Hyeres and the peninsula of Giens where there is more choice.
The peninsula of Giens, connected to the mainland by a double tombolo (very rare, only two in Europe - in fact it's two sand bars with salt marshes inside) is a green lung for Hyeres. One can make beautiful hikes to explore coves and creeks where one can have a break and swim.
Water sports lovers are not forgotten with the famous Almanarre Beach where the Mistral is a joy for kite surfers. Swimming is gently sloping, ideal for children.
Hyères is also a medieval town with picturesque streets and the remains of fortifications. There are many shops. Those looking for the seaside atmosphere will head for the port of Hyères with many restaurants and cafes.
The racetrack of Hyères hosts many horse races (some of which are even televised) near the beaches and a beautiful pine forest. Some night events are organized in summer.

We have been visiting the Cote d'Azure over several years - from Nice westwards to Cassis - and loved it. But Hyeres stands out as exceptional - 'impeccable' as the French say ! Such a beautiful, elegant town is in a league of its own. Broad palm- lined pavements and boulevards, everywhere Bel Eoque villas and fine buildings and a fascinating old town leading up
flower-laden winding lanes with fabulous views, to the castle itself. This is one of the finest towns I,ve seen anywhere and would gladly even make my home here. It must be France,s best kept secret !
Yes, the road south to Tour Fondue and the ferry to the Isles d,Or leads past some unexpectedly fine and justifiably popular beaches, well served by local buses. We intend to spend more time on these beautiful sandy stretches. The trips to Porquerolles with its beaches esp Notre Dame and Port Cross by sea are sensational.
Lots to do in stunning Hyeres - even the Information Bureau is classic - we loved it and WILL be back .Can't wait. La France at its very best.
