Located north of Quiberon Bay, (off the coast of Brittany) Plouharnel is, for most holiday makers, simply an unavoidable leg of their journey on their way to Belle-Ile-en-Mer or Quiberon itself. Even though Plouharnel village doesn’t border the ocean it is still a great destination for those looking for a bit of calm while still having beaches and visitor attractions close at hand (two abbeys, the Carnac standing stones are but a “stone’s” throw away, the nearby gulf of Morbihan….).
Plouharnel’s beaches continue on from Erdeven’s from the west and join onto Saint-Pierre-de-Quiberon’s further down the coast. There is plenty of choice with around 6km (3.7 miles) of Atlantic facing beach to choose from. Easy to access, Sainte-Barbe beach is the most comprehensive option with a lifeguard station and a designated water sports area. The neighbouring beaches of Ty Hoche and La Guérite are more natural and require a little more effort to get to and going further south, closer to the Quiberon Peninsula, you can even go sand yachting! However, please note that naturalism is strictly prohibited on Plouharnel’s beaches (its practice was often abused – the closest naturalist beach is at Erdeven). However, on some beaches leashed dogs are allowed, which is somewhat of a rarity in the French department of Morbihan.
Plouharnel’s surroundings have an infinite number of swimming areas! The beaches of Ile-de-Groix are unmissable and definitely worth the journey, as is the coastal resort of Carnac, known for its standing stones.
