The department of La Manche is located in the north of France in Normandy. In the west, it begins in Mont-Saint-Michel, forming with the adjoining department of Ille et Vilaine the bay of Mont Saint-Michel. The beaches of Calvados are located in the east; some are famous since the 1944 landing.
In the west, the beaches of La Manche stretch from Avranches to Cherbourg. They are mainly covered in sand and some stretch several kilometres. The southernmost beaches are subject to high tides, making it impossible to swim at low tide (the sea may withdraw for several kilometres).
The coast is wilder and more rugged in the east. There are many small coves.
It is also possible to visit the Anglo-Norman islands (Chausey or Jersey).
