Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is located on the east coast of the Nord-Cotentin in Normandy (the county of Manche – Val de Saire) about thirty kilometres from Cherbourg. This is a major seaside destination for this county.
You will only find two beaches in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. Only the Hougue beach, south of the town centre, seems to be interesting. It extends for over more than one kilometre and offers magnificent views of the two Vauban Towers and Tatihou island.
A pleasant pedestrian promenade leads towards the tower of Vauban Hogue. Along the long beach, you can enjoy the various facilities (playground for children, picnic tables, ...).
The Tatihou island is less than a kilometre away from the port of Saint-Vaast. It is accessible on foot at low tide (see tide timetable – you can walk through the oysters’ parks) or by amphibious boat (a boat with wheels that can roll on the sand or surf the sea). Allow one day to tour the island and visit the various points of interest (maritime garden, maritime museum, Vauban tower).
The county of Calvados is nearby. We recommend you go to the Omaha Beach (one of the landing beaches in Normandy in 1944) where you will find the American cemetery.
