Le Palais is the largest city in Belle-Ile-en-Mer. It is organized around the port and citadel. Although the beaches of Le Palais are not the nicest ones in Belle-Ile, the city is a must-see.
The port sinks into the city in a typically Breton atmosphere. There are still fishermen selling the catch of the day directly on the piers. Nearby, one can taste the products of the island on Republic Square, in the local market. Lamb lovers can taste the one of Belle-Ile salted by the ocean.
The Citadel is a must see. It is a private property (abandoned after the Seven-Year War when it came under the British flag). One can visit it (for a fee) and it houses a hotel.
The beaches of Le Palais are the smallest of the island (the best ones are on the south coast). Ramonet is the most famous one (probably because of its proximity to the port) but the space is small ... In summer, it is difficult to find space. We like Bordardoué, which is wider at low tide and where there are unique rocks. The beaches of Locmaria, including the beautiful Grands Sables Beach, which is the largest beach in Belle Ile en Mer, are located in the east. On the south coast, creeks are heavenly. The beaches of Bangor are among the most beautiful of the island. We like Herlin or Vazen, which is adjacent to Donnant Beach, a popular surf spot.
