Located about 4 km from Marseille (in the seventh arrondissement), the archipelago of Frioul, made up by a group of four islands, is famous for its fortress and beautiful coves.
Pomègues, Ratonneau, If and Tiboulen in Frioul make up this 200-acre wildlife and exceptional flora territory, a real wild haven. There are several beaches and creeks in Ile de Frioul. Saint-Esteve Beach is the most popular because it is the only monitored beach in summer in the island. Tahiti Beach is the most beautiful but difficult to access. It is advisable to choose a beach before landing on the islands because they are large and there is lots of choice, the most beautiful ones are quickly full (spaces are limited). However, beaches are nicer here than in Marseille. Quality is nearly the same in the creeks between Cassis and Marseille and they are easily accessible.
The microclimate in the archipelago allows 200 rare plant species to grow and the yellow-legged gull, which one comes from afar to admire, has elected residence there for years.
The archipelago belongs to the Calanques National Park. One can go there by boat from the Old Port of Marseille (30 minutes) and boaters enjoy the harbour between the islands of Ratonneau and Pomègues, which are connected by a dike. The first one is the most famous for its beaches and the second one, wilder, is a delight for walkers (the wildest creeks are located there).
One should visit the prison-fortress where Alexander Dumas imprisoned his hero the Count of Monte Cristo, the remains of military buildings and Caroline hospital, built in the nineteenth century.
Please note that dogs are allowed on Ile de Frioul. However, they are only allowed on the rockiest coves. Moreover, nudism is not allowed on the islands.
At the port, there are several restaurant bars with pleasant terraces. Do not forget to bring water in sufficient quantity because there is no shade on the island and it is very hot.
