Beaches in Martigues (13500) France - advise, map and photos

The city centre of Martigues is about 5 km away from the sea. La Couronne is the main seaside town of Martigues. It has the most beautiful sandy beaches of the Blue Coast including the Verdon beach or the beach in Sainte Croix. Several small beaches are also available in well-sheltered coves. It is not for nothing that the Marseillais come to spend the weekend in Marseille.

To the west of La Couronne, there is also the old fishing port of Carro (tuna) and a few sandy beaches. It is from there that you can also take the coastal path to find a nice little cove in a bay.

Although Martigues is not by the sea (but on the edge of the Etang de Berre), a visit is required to this Venice of Provence. You can walk around the island area with its small canals and fishing boats. If you come in the summer, try to enjoy “poutargue” (mullet eggs - caviar of the Mediterranean). It is expensive because the production is very low (a few tens of kilo per year).

The only downside to this beautiful landscape of the Blue Coast, the presence of the oil ports on the outskirts of Martigues. The high buildings disfigure this beautiful region between Camargue and Provence.
