The island of Porquerolles is the largest of the islands of Hyères (8 km long by 3 km wide) and the most popular. This island off the coast of Hyères is inhabited throughout the year.
The most beautiful beaches on the island, some of which are sheltered, are located north of the island of Porquerolles. They are accessible by small paths through the vegetation of the island. The setting is magnificent. There are small creeks and coves south of the island, which is more rugged, but swimming can be regulated.
It is possible to stroll around Porquerolles. Visitors will discover many forts (St. Agatha, Petit-Langoustier, Grand Langoustier and Repentance). One can also visit the lighthouse of the island, which is one of the most powerful in the region. The Gorges du Loup is equally impressive but one must be very careful because the rock is brittle.
The Emanuel Lopez garden is remarkable and worth a detour (free admission).
The island can be explored on foot or by bicycle (riding is forbidden on some parts - several routes from 6 to 14 km). On the island, one can also visit wineries on wine tasting tours.
The peninsula of Giens provides access to the island of Porquerolles (Port of La Tour Fondue - connections all year). It also has connections in summer from the seaside resorts of Toulon, Le Lavandou, Cavalaire, La Londe les Maures and La Croix-Valmer.
Spring is the best season to visit the island of Porquerolles (April and May). In summer, the different beaches are very crowded and it is difficult to find a space to put one’s towel down!
