The seaside resort of Saint-Denis d'Oléron is located north of the island of Oléron. The lighthouse of Chassiron is located on the northwest tip, and is nicknamed "the end of the world." After climbing 220 steps, one can enjoy one of the best views in the island of Oléron of the island of Aix, the island of Ré and La Rochelle. The gardens of the lighthouse are open to the public (free of charge). There are several fish locks behind it (made with dry stone) at low tide.
The liveliest part of Saint-Denis is located around the marina (east side). All around, many colourful restaurants provide lunch with a view of the harbour. Many activities are available in season. Two of the three beaches in Saint-Denis d'Oléron are located around the port. Boirie Beach is the most family-oriented and the most picturesque with its bathing huts and its many entertainments for young people. To the west, the beach huts are also very nice and bordered by several campsites. For the other beaches in Oléron, see our guide.
Nearby, one can enjoy the beaches of Boyardville with magnificent views of the famous fort Boyard (there are also boat trips from the port of St Denis but not that the fort is private property, one cannot visit it).
