La Rochelle, located north of Charente-Maritime, close to the Island of Ré, is not just a beach destination! There are only three sandy beaches (fairly small, each about 200 meters long) but its architectural heritage compensate for this lack! By itself, the old port is a real picture postcard with its towers (the towers of St-Nicolas, Chaine and Lanterne - one can visit them and watch the view of La Rochelle), its wharf with cafés and restaurants; the boats complete the picture. Around July 14, the Francofolies festival takes place in this neighborhood, bringing together many enthusiasts for outdoor concerts. All musical genres are mixed for several days.
As for the beaches, Concurrence Beach is the closest to the Old Port. Minimes is the most famous with a pine forest nearby. Note that it is easily accessible by sea bus transiting from the Old Port to the Port of Minimes. If you are looking for beautiful beaches, go to the beaches of the Island of Ré (caution, paid bridge access) or to the beaches of Châtelaillon-Plage (about 10 km away).
As for the must-see in La Rochelle, the Aquarium is a must with the presence of many marine animals from the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Pacific and warm seas. The visit is organized around more than 60 basins.
