Sainte-Marie-de-Ré is a green seaside resort located south of the island of Ré. There are narrow streets with white houses and flowered hollyhocks in Ré-style architecture. The bell tower of the church offers a magnificent view over the neighbouring islands of Oléron and Aix (open to the public, contact the tourist office).
On the coastline, there are several beaches in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré. The coast is rocky at low tide with many fish locks (there are eight all over the town). is It is therefore only possible to swim at high tide. At low tide, one can practice shore fishing. There is a famous surf spot north of the town and the village of La Noue (the largest of the island).
From the port of Sainte-Marie, one can reach the island of Aix or La Rochelle. A spa center is available south of the village.
Nearby, Saint-Martin de Ré is worth a detour, which village is the largest of the island with fortifications ranked by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is also the largest town of the island and the busiest. There are many shops and restaurants around the harbour.
