Le Portel is a seaside resort located in the department of Pas-de-Calais. It is one of the suburbs of Boulogne-Sur-Mer bordered by the English Channel. It is 35 km from Calais. The resort is very popular with the inhabitants of Boulogne.
Nearby, in Outreau, the Poulpaphone Current Music Festival is the most important event in October and welcomes rock, reggae, hip-hop artists...
Visitors enjoy walking along Portel Beach or discovering the nearby resorts, like Equihen-Plage, Hardelot and Wimereux. The 2-km beach is nice and peaceful; it is very well developed and maintained throughout the year. There are no pebbles and many children friendly areas. From the seafront, one can see on clear days the cliffs of the English coast on the horizon. Further south, at Cape Alprech, the coast is wilder. There are two secluded coves, the first one in the town of Portel (Ningles) and the second one in the town of Equihen (Crevasse Cove). Both creeks are renowned for collecting mussels.
The Boulogne region provides secure swimming and various activities like hiking on the path of the Douaniers from where the changing landscapes are superb. There are several forts such as Heurt (accessible at low tide) and Alprech, which can be visited. All around, one can practice shore fishing.
One can also enjoy water sports, kite surfing, windsurfing...
