The island of Aix is located in Charente-Maritime off Fouras between the island of Oléron at the south and the island of Ré at the north. Access is made only by boat from the tip of la Fumée from Fouras-les-Bains or according to the time of year since the island of Ré, the island of Oléron, of La Rochelle, of La Tranche-sur-Mer or Port-des-Barques. Access of cars is very regulated, only service cras are allowed. So the bike is the best way to go around the island.
The arrival by boat is done by the south of the island. From there, very nice view on the Fort de la Rade, work of Vauban. On the right, we also see l’Anse du Saillant with the Coquillages beach. On the pier, you can also see the famous Fort Boyard (not accessible to the public but boats allows you to approach it).
From the Fort, the entrance of the town is made by a door. A large field awaits you with some carriages allowing you to go around the island. A little further, you will find some bike rentals.
Beaches side on the island of Aix, there are 5 official but only the beach of Anse de la Croix (south-west of the island near the town) is monitored in summer. The others are not monitored, we highly advise you, if you want to go swimming, to bring you shoes because we find many rocks covered with oysters with sharp shells.
