Grandcamp Maisy is a Norman seaside resort in the department of Calvados near the Pointe du Hoc (this is where we found a German battery during the Second World War, it was a priority area during the landing of June 6, 1944) and north of Saint-Lô. It is an old fashionable destination of the Belle Epoque for the inhabitants of Paris (the train used to arrive directly in the village). Some nice villas from this prosperous period are still visible on the seaside.
The big beach of Grandcamp-Maisy stretches on the east part of the city (the harbor is the central point). Huge sandy beach at low tide (the sea can retreat far, it is then a very good spot for fishing by foot), it is totally recovered at high tide. Like fr the neighbooring municipalities, the algae invade the beach but they are daily collected in summer. This beach is part of the Landing beaches , we are on the zone of Omaha Beach (west we got to the zone of Utah Beach – from Sainte-Marie-du-Mont to Quinéville).
This part of the coast is very touristic, there are many remains and museums dedicated to the Second World War. The american cemetary is two steps away from Colleville. It is where there is a big and nice sandy beach. Arromanches les Bains is also a must.
