Beaches in Vierville-sur-Mer (14710) France - advise, map and photos

Vierville sur Mer is located in Normandy in the Calvados landing site. It is here that we find the famous Omaha Beach (actually three towns), one of the five Normandy landing beaches.

The Omaha Beach extends for over 6.5 km from Port-en-Bessin on the east to Vierville on the west. Surrounded by green cliffs, the beach was very easy to defend for the Germans. The German defences held out tirelessly for many hours. The casualties could be counted in thousands (hence the name "Bloody Omaha" but the operation was a success). Vierville sur Mer had a very important position for its unimposing terrain allowed heavy vehicles to land and move inland.

Vierville sur Mer Beach extends for over a kilometre along the main road. It has a lifeguard station in the summer season. Its gently shelving beach and the vastness of this beautiful beach is often called golden beach.

During low tides, you can see the remains of the artificial port of Vierville sur Mer, which was destroyed on June 19 by a storm (one at Arromanches les Bains resisted).

Close to Vierville sur Mer, the Pointe du Hoc is worth a visit (it was a strategic point to defend Omaha Beach with long-range artillery). The beach of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer follows on; that’s where you can find memorials. Further east, in the hills above the beach in Colleville sur Mer, you will find the American cemetery with over 9300 graves of US soldiers killed during the Second World War.
