The village of Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, located northwest of the island of Ré, is known for its lighthouse, which is the highest point of the island. The best views in Charente-Maritime are from the top of it, with the coast of Vendée on the right, the sea of Pertuis Breton, the tip of the Aiguillon and the island of Oléron on the left with the Island de Ré behind and a view of the marshes.
The beaches of Saint-Clement des Baleines are among the most beautiful in Charente-Maritime. The most interesting are located east of the Baleines Lighthouses and stretches several kilometres in a beautiful bay where one can also swim at low tide. The dunes are highly developed and the forest of Lizay borders the eastern part.
Close to St Clement, there are many beaches in Les Portes en Ré, which is the north easternmost village of the island. The Bucheron bench is one of the curiosities; one can stroll around it at low tide. To the south, just a few kilometres away, the village of Ars en Ré is ranked among the beautiful villages of France. The benchmark is the black and white bell tower.
