The seaside resort of Les Sables d'Olonne, located in the Vendée department less than 100 km from La Rochelle on the Coast of Light, is one of the busiest resorts in the Pays de la Loire. The main beach of Les Sables d'Olonne is located in its arc bay. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area with many activities in summer.
The Chaume neighbourhood is probably one of the most typical neighbourhoods in Les Sables d'Olonne. Its small fishing houses with red tiles show how the seaside resort looked like before urbanization.
On the embankment, there are also many shops, cafes, restaurants and activities oriented on beach tourism such as a casino, a pool or hotels. One of the most impressive sites in the area is located at the end of the embankment and the cornice, with the well of Hell, a deep gorge where waves come crashing.
The Breton-Vendee marsh is further north (less known than the Poitier marsh but not uninteresting) as well as the Yeu and Noirmoutier islands.
There are also many events in Les Sables d'Olonne. The most famous is the Vendée Globe. One can also spend a day at the Puy du Fou with one’s children where one can attend shows with historical themes.
To unwind, a thalassotherapy centre is also available near the beach in Chateau d'Olonne (south). For those looking for spacious areas, we recommend the beaches of Olonne sur Mer, which coastline has remained very wild.
