Situated in the department of Calvados, a few kilometres from Caen, the little resort of Bernières-sur-Mer is famous for being part of the Juno Beach area, one of the five allied landing beaches.
Once a thriving port, the village retains its authenticity with its beautiful villas by the sea and its friendly atmosphere that attracts enthusiasts of shore fishing or those just seeking peace and quiet. The great beach of Bernières sur Mer is indeed the ideal place for this popular activity, the big rocks reserving nice surprises at low tide. This is also where the "famous", French Canadian soldiers, landed. Note that the Bernières Beach is divided in 5 zones (only the western part is supervised).
Among the things not to miss is the Church of Notre Dame de la Nativité, which dates back from the eleventh century and its beautiful medieval architecture, with a bell tower rising to 67 meters above sea level, making it the highest in the Côte de Nacre. The manor of Luzerne is registered as an historic monuments and has a very well preserved dovecote; the castles of Semilly and Quintefeuille are also remarkable.
You can also walk along the cliffs of Cap Romain, a classified national nature reserve and home to many species of seabirds.
Nearby are the beaches of Courseulles sur Mer lined with pleasant villas and beaches of Luc sur Mer with its thalassotherapy centre.
