The small seaside resort of Leffrinckoucke is located in the Nord department. It is not far from Dunkirk and only about fifteen kilometers from the Belgian border.
The village is mainly known for its dune fort and the Leffrinckoucke battery right next to it. The battery was integrated into the Atlantic Wall during World War II and can be visited today. The fort itself dates back to 1878 and had the role of protecting Dunkirk.
The Leffrinckoucke beach is located between the beaches of Malo-les-Bains, a hamlet belonging to Dunkirk and Zuydcoote, the neighboring coastal town. It is bordered by 150 hectares of dunes and stretches for 3 km. There are few shops near the beach, and the promenade is very pleasant. People come here to enjoy the calm and tranquility of a preserved little village. As you go east, the beach becomes completely wild. You can even see some shipwrecks at low tide. Continuing further, you reach the Bray-Dunes beach with a more lively seaside resort in the summer.
At low tide, speed-sail and land yacht enthusiasts gather here, bringing joy to vacationers. To discover the local fauna and flora, there's nothing like a walk on one of the two trails created by the town, the Battery trail and the Dewulf dune trail.
Note that dogs are allowed on the wild part of the beach during the summer (starting from the boat descent towards Bray-Dunes). Outside of the summer season (September 15 to June 15), they are allowed on the entire beach.
