Gravelines is a resort located in the department of “Nord”, about twenty kilometres from Dunkirk and on the limit with the beaches of Pas de Calais. The town consists of different areas including the town centre surrounded by its fortifications, the “Huttes” that make up the old fishing village and Petit Fort Philippe, a favourite destination for holidaymakers. It is here that you are closer to the sea and we have some very nice beaches of the Côte d’Opale.
The beach resort is located at the mouth of the Aa and offers 3 kilometres of fine sand. There is a long pier where you can stroll and enjoy the scenery. The place is full of charm and you are seduced by its beach cabins typical of the 1900. A little bit isolated from the town centre of Gravelines, the beach is made up of several areas. The central part is very family orientated with many activities in the summer season but it is possible to reach the beach of Petit Fort Philippe by small paths through the dunes in the northern part and find a more secluded area. Among the things to see, is the black and white lighthouse of Gravelines, one of the few still existing on the coast of the North Sea. The bravest will climb the 104 steps and can then enjoy an exceptional view of the estuary.
Gravelines also has an important military heritage, a castle-fortress, old magazines and a nice walkway. Nearby, for nature lovers, are the beaches of Oye-Plage where you can discover completely preserved areas in a nature reserve. Malo les Bains’ beaches are nearby; it is also an opportunity to experience the seafront of Dunkirk.
