Set in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, on the « Côte Vermeille », the seaside resort of Banyuls-sur-Mer is a charming little area very close to the Spanish border. Renowned for its architecture and history rich in its Catalan traditions that contribute to its success. There are several beaches and coves in Banyuls sur Mer including those of “Trop Pinell” (or Troc Beach) well protected by the rocks, Sana with in the background vineyards and Elmes. One of the nicest is probably the one of the smugglers, which follows the coast leading down to Cap Béar lighthouse and towards the Spanish border. On foot, horseback or mountain bike, aromas mingle with the landscape of olive groves, small hamlets and oak forests, a rich and preserved natural place that makes the success of Banyuls-sur-Mer. Food lovers will be delighted to taste “escalivadas”, “cargolades” and other “boles of picolat”!
Near Banyuls, there are outstanding beaches in Cerbère or Port-Vendres characteristic of the Côte Vermeille. Further up north, to the large sandy beaches from Argelès.
