The seaside destination of Canet-en-Roussillon, located in the department Pyrenees-Orientales in South of France, is a charming little village and a long fine sand beach. The old Canet pleases tourists looking for authenticity with its small streets, it pretty clocktower, and the chateau d l'Esparrou that was once a hunting pavilion. We stroll the streets admiring the Canétoises, or beautiful houses dating to the previous century. Nearby, Canet-Plage proposes a great three-kilometer promenade that borders a vast beach that plunges into crystal clear water. Sailing, jet skiing, subaquatic hiking... the activities are plenty in this athletic city! From the harbor it is possible to so be initiated to diving at seven years old, a great idea since it is free and materials are provided! The beaches of Canet en Roussillon are separated into several zones. The largest is located on the right bank of the harbor near Lido and extends to the beach in St Cyprien (but there is no lifeguard). On the left bank we find a more wild beach that extends to Sainte-Marie Plage. It is to us the most agreeable beach in Canet-Plage because it is not close to the agitation of downtown and there is a lifeguard in the summer. Those looking for activities should wander toward Place de la Méditerranée with its many shops, restaurants and cafes bordering the nice beach.
Those who love nature won't want to miss going to the Canet Saint-Nazaire pond – a real haven of peach in which flamingos live in liberty, along with more than 200 other species of birds. The reserve, classified in the ecological network of European sites Natura 2000, can be visited all year long giving you the occasion to discover the pretty traditional fishermen's huts.
