Our opinion on the Main Beach

The main beach in Ambleteuse is located south of the resort in Fort Vauban (also wrongly nicknamed old Fort Mahon). This beach has a first aid station in summer and is covered in gravels at high tide and sand at low tide. The area closest to the fort is the most popular. The beach is non-existent along the dike at high tide. At low tide, one can reach the beach from the dunes of the Slack, which offer a wilder, less urban environment.

It is possible to park in rue du Fort. The beach is fifty meters away. The beach is not equipped for disabled people but a ramp leads to it quite easily with help.

This is an aerial view of Ambleteuse, its beach and fort (on the right). One can also see the mouth of the Slack.

Fort Vauban, a symbol of this beach, gives a more authentic side. It is classified as a historic monument and was rescued from ruin by Dr. Jacques Mereau with his wife and volunteers in 1967. One can see it all along the Jacques Mereau seawall promenade.

Unfortunately, this gravel beach is very narrow at high tide. Attendance is significant.

This fort is only open to visitors (every Sunday from 3 pm to 6pm from Easter to November, weekends and public holidays in July and August – entrance fee € 3).
