Port Louis’ Grande Plage Beach is located near the citadel behind the fortifications. This is an artificial beach made by Louis-Philippe's wife (1830-1848). This is why it is frequently nicknamed the royal beach. Before that, the beach existed (with less sand) and was nicknamed Grand Sablon.
This long 200 meters ‘beach has a restaurant directly situated on the sand and a row of 116 bathing cabins. In the summer season, it has a lifeguard station and is equipped for people with reduced mobility (tyralo and carpet provided on the sand). Please note that dogs are not allowed on this beach. Nice view of Larmor-Plage on one side and Gâvres on the other
To go to this beach, follow the direction for the Citadel. There are several car parks before arriving at the beach. Access is through a door built in the fortifications.
