Marennes is known to be the capital of the oyster, less to be a seaside resort. Surrounded by salt marshes, its activity is today turned to oyster farming. Its small port of Cayenne (along Seudre) with its huts and seafood restaurants is the central point of interest of this ancient island of Saintonge. But, Marennes also has a seaside… Marennes Beach… small but very well equipped.
The opening of Marennes on the Atlantic Ocean (Pertuis Maumusson) is narrow, the area is very swampy and tides. Facing the seaside resort, there is a nice swimming pool with a beautiful sandy beach. Monitored and very well appointed, it is accessible even at low tide… which is very rare in the vicinity.
The island of Oléron is nearby (this is probably why Marennes Beach is unknown), the opportunity to spend a day there. We can also easily go to the left bank of the Seudre on the peninsula of Arvert (we can step over the Seudre) in the beautiful seaside resort of Ronce-les-Bains (La Tremblade) and Palmyre where we find one of the largest zoo in France.
