Located in the department of the Somme, the small seaside resort of Fort-Mahon is a long sandy beach and a popular tourist destination. It is also the best resort in Marquenterre and one of the most popular places for yachting enthusiasts. Sailing, kayaking, paddling or kite surfing are also practiced but one mostly comes here to admire the dunes of Fort-Mahon. Facing the English Channel, a discovery tour also offers to become familiar with the very special flora of the dunes, a 4 km trail taking guests to the nearby town of Quend-Plage.
There are three beaches in Fort-Mahon (which is like one big beach). The central beach is the most familiar with a first aid station, toilets and accommodation for disabled people. The north beach is reserved for athletes with a nautical center and very high dunes. The south beach is wilder and an extension of Quend Beach.
The river Authie also crosses the village, which route ends in the bay of the same name, and which Fort-Mahon shares with Berck sur Mer. There are many walks to be made, the charming little port of Madelon is at the bottom of the bay, which has kept its old-fashioned charm and which is surrounded by countryside. Further south, the port of Fort-Mahon is also a must see, as well as the foreshore, which is located at the foot of the dunes, and which is paradise at low tide for those who love coastal fishing.
