The small resort of Houlgate is situated in Normandy, in the heart of the Pays d'Auge. The one we nicknamed the "Pearl of the Côte Fleurie" was known as its famous neighbours Cabourg or Deauville, a boom thanks to the fashion for sea bathing in the early part of the last century.
There is a large sandy beach in Houlgate divided into two sectors. That of the city centre offers many activities in the summer season with an ideal location opposite the casino and the bathhouse. Children are not forgotten with a beach club.
The city has an amazing architectural heritage and people come from far away to admire the luxurious residences which have retained their charm. A circuit is also organised and to discover some of the 41 villas that stand facing the sea. Les Mouettes, Bel Ombrage or Les Clochettes are among the most famous, and the town is famous for its coloured brick houses.
Among the things not to miss is a walk on the side of the Vaches Noires cliffs which owe their name to the dark colour of their rocks. They extend for over 6 kilometres and link-up with Villers-sur-Mer. From the sea, they offer an amazing sight, especially at sunset.
The resort is known for being family orientated and its medieval past adds to this popular destination a certain elegance. Le Moulin Landry is an example of that preserved heritage.
