Salin de Giraud is a small village located forty kilometres from Arles, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, dating back to the nineteenth century. It has retained its characteristic architecture of red brick buildings. Before becoming a small seaside resort, Salin was intended for employees of the nearby factories. The village lies in the Rhone estuary and the Piémanson Beach, also called the Great Beach of Arles, is a wide stretch of sand over several kilometres, and welcomes tourists and especially lovers of naturism.
Until 2015, many campers were moving on to the beach (a kind of giant free campsite). Since 2016, the mayor instructions prohibit any form of camping on the beach. During our last visit (June 2016), the beach was completely deserted (the previous year in the same period, it was an overcrowded campsite).
Near the lakes south of Vaccarès which are home to numerous species of birdlife, colonies of flamingos can be seen while walking, exploring the area.
Trails have been built on the side of the lakes to allow walkers and cyclists to discover the region up to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
Among the things not to be missed, visit the domain of La Palissade which is outside the breakwaters that separate the Camargue from the Rhone and the museum of salt. The Bay of Beauduc also offers beautiful walks and a totally unspoilt beach extending for several kilometres.
Access to Salin de Giraud is from Arles (35 minutes’ drive) or by ferry from Port Saint Louis (the Rhône is between the two cities, crossing is possible by boat to avoid a roundtrip all the way to Arles).
Holiday accommodations are nearly non-existent in the area. There are some properties to rent in Salin de Giraud ... otherwise you must go back to Arles ...
