Situated between the lakes of Gruissan, Grazel and the Mediterranean, the seaside resort of Gruissan is the most original resort in the Aude department. The old town is dominated by its castle, the ruins of the Barberousse tower and its small fishermen's houses.
South of the village, we enter the coastal area of Gruissan with the right bank of the port and left bank Mateille. Further south is Gruissan-Plage with its famous cabins on stilts.
As for the beaches of Gruissan, the choice is wide! In the centre of the resort, one artificial beach Grazel facing the Ile aux Oiseaux. In the south, it's on Chalets Beach that we find the originality of Gruissan with stilt houses in the background. To the east, in the direction of Narbonne, there is the untamed Mateille Beach and Ayguades Beach where there are many leisure facilities (Summer Residences and campsites). Going toward Port-la-Nouvelle, is the beach of Vieille Nouvelle.
Gruissan is renowned for its wind. Several sites are available for practicing kitesurfing (e.g. Lake Grazel) or windsurfing.
To the west, the salt marshes of St. Martin island can be visited by a guided tour of about 1h30.
Note that the car parks are free in Gruissan which is very rare in a seaside resort.
