Between the sea, Etang de Thau and the Canal du Midi, the resort of Sète is located in the department of Herault. With nearly 12 km of equipped beaches with the Thau lagoon in the background, Sete is renowned for its seaside facilities and beautiful stretches of sand which makes it very popular with tourists. The Corniche walk, 2 km from the town centre, is the starting point for various sandy beaches easily accessible by a bike path, a beautiful pedestrian walk or by road with many free car parks. Several lifeguard stations are spread along the 12 km of beaches. You can also find numerous restaurants and many activities. Going south, you reach the beaches of Marseillan that follow on.
The port of Sète is undoubtedly the most picturesque part of the town. With the coming and going of the boats, the fishermen landing their catches and tourists who admire the show, the harbour is a must. In the area of La Marine, you will find many restaurants where you can enjoy the specialities with colourful surroundings.
Those who want to have a panoramic view of Sète, the Pyrenees and the Languedoc coast should go to Mont-Clair over 180 meters above sea level, an ideal place to enjoy the view.
If you go to Sète between April and September, be sure to attend one of the Languedoc jousting tournaments taking place since the creation of Sète.
To enjoy the Mediterranean and its beaches, you can visit the beaches of Cap d'Agde which offer a greater diversity than that of Sete or the beaches of Frontignan. Families seeking less agitated beaches (on days when the sea is rough) can head towards the villages of the Etang de Thau (Balaruc, Bouzigues or Mèze).
Sète is also known for kitesurfing. There several spots on different beaches or on the Etang de Thau, to begin to practice in the shallow water.
